Alright, so now the large Tiki is carved and you are getting ready to ship it to your customer. What is the best way to get it to its final destination in one piece?

As mentioned in our previous blog, the use of a forklift is a must since the Tiki could weigh as much as 800 lbs. Set up a custom pallet so that the tiki can rest flat on it without sticking out at all; that will prevent the shipper from damaging it when loading and unloading. In order to increase the stability of the Tiki, nail some 1" X 1" next to the head, butt and base.

Secure the Tiki with straps, 3 or 4 should do the trick. You can either stop right there and the Tiki is ready to go if the carrier will let you ship a parcel that is not stackable. In some cases, you may need to create a complete casing and build it strong enough to support other parcels on top of it.

The largest Tiki that we carved so far is about 10 feet with a diameter of about 3.5 feet. The picture showns was carved from a 200 year old airpod tree from the Waikiki zoo. Outdoor coconut Tikis: How To Give A Beautiful Finish by Tikimaster?

Tikis made of coconut or palm wood are usually the best economic way to enhance your pool or outdoor area. Usually they are fairly affordable for about $200 for a 40", $300 for a 60" and $450 for a 70". While the grain of the coconut can be a little "boring" compare to Acacia Koa, Monkey Pod or other tropical wood, there are ways to enlight the finish of a coconut Tiki.

We recommend to use Thompson water sealant for outdoor use to give a natural finish which will protect the Tiki carving against the element.

If you wish to give a stain to your Tiki sculpture then a Polyehturene from Min-Wax works great! The beauty is that you can choose from many available different finish (from light brown to mahogany).

Another option is to burn with a torch the outer carvings of the Tiki which will bring some accents to it. Again upon completion apply a clear finish to protect the Tiki.

Now that you own a Tiki, you may wonder how can I preserve it for many years to come? They are a few different factors to take into consideration: for instance are you in a dry weather type, hunid ot wet?
Also, what type of wood is your Tiki, the wood in fact has different properties like metal, plastic and many other materials. After nearly 10 years in dealing with Tiki products TIkimaster.com has come up with great solutions to not only maintain but preserve your "Tiki" investment.
Pine Wood: Pine is a light weight wood that has a tendency to reat very quickly to the element from expanding when it's humid to cracking when it's hot and dry. Remember, a crack is not a defect! It is the normal course that the wood takes when exposed to different elements. It is best to apply wax to any type of pine carvings which will one nourish the wood, two will repel the water when wet. If the weather is dry, inevitably you will see some some cracks which can be filled with some wood filler.
Palm Wood: Palm has the caracteristic to keep the water in that's why when you purchased your palm Tiki the weight felt really heavy...well it is a good thing. The drier it will get, the weaker it will be! The best analogy is your skin/body, if you don't drink then you become de-hydrated to the point where your skin would literally wrinkle at a certain extent. Same with palm, we recommend to water your totem from the top. But make sure that your totem is sitting on a concrete base otherwise your Tiki will rot from the bottom if it touches the ground not to mention that depending on your location, termites and other insects will get to it.
Monkey Pod Wood: Monkey Pod (Acacia Koa) is the ultimate wood for indoor and outdoor use. The wood is dense which allows the maximum details when carved. To maintain your Acacia Koa Tiki, simply apply some Thompson water sealant for complete water protection or some tung oil for a more polish oil looking finish.

KAMAKANI ENT., INC AT ASR TRADESHOW IN SAN DIEGO 2008

For the first time we were lucky enough to meet the "Tiki" team from Hawaii. The ASR tradeshow was taking place at the convention center in San Diego for 3 days from September 4-6. While the larger companies were around, we noticed a decline in smaller companies. But Hawaii was represented really well with Mauna Kai Hawaii (Surf jewelry and accessories) and Kamakani Enterprises, Inc also known as TIkimaster.com (Specialized in Tiki decor, surf decor, coastal and nautical decor, Hawaiian decor, pirate and skull & bones decor).

Based on various feedback the show was not as busy as the previous years for the mere reason that the economic landscape is affecting the attendence. Jerome Coudrier from Kamakani Enterprises, Inc was very please with their first show and explain that some key contacts have been made.

Stand up paddle board keeps growing and we noticed that more and more manfacturer were jumping on the band wagon. We expect the next show to be greater also being that the elections are only less than 2 month away, we are all in a wait and see frame of mind.

Well, we all know that Hawaii is known for its Tikis and Polynesian carvings...California is as well known for its surf culture.
We found that Florida is actually known for its pirate decor! Interestingly enough, Tikis are tied to them indirectly. You could very well have your Tiki bar as the center piece and use a Tiki carving with either some surf accessories such as hand carved surf signed or some pirate signs or vintage pirate framed paintings.

Did you know this amount pirate history: The history of piracy dates back more than 3000 years, but its true word depends on the actual meaning of the word ‘pirate’. In English, the word piracy has many different meanings and its usage is still pretty new. Today, some uses of the word have no particular meaning at all.

A meaning was first ascribed to the word piracy sometime before the XVII century. It seems the word pirate (peirato) was first used in about 140 BC by the Roman historian Polybius. The Greek historian Plutarch, writing in about 100 A.D., gave the oldest clear definition of piracy. He described pirates as those who attack without legal authority not only ships, but also maritime cities. Piracy was described for the first time, among others, in Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Today, we are featuring the storyboard that dipicts King Kamehameha's crossing of the Molokai Channel. After taking Maui and Molokai, his war canoes crossed the channel and landed at Waialae and Waikiki, on O`ahu. As Kamehameha's warriors pushed up Nuuanu Valley, they were fired upon by two cannons causing great loss of life and destruction. Kamehameha sent a division of his best men to double back and climb the ridge above Pauoa Valley. A runner was sent to the reserve forces in Waikiki with instructions to climb Manoa Valley and follow the ridge trail to Nuuanu Pali where they would join the other division to capture the cannons. Stunned by this military manuever, the Oahu warriors defended their positions in vain and fought to the bitter end. Some escaped over the mountains, others were pushed over the pali and many, rather than surrender, plunged to their deaths from the 1000 ft. cliffs. The decisive battle of Nuuanu Pali gave Kamehameha control of the islands, except Kauai, that remained independent.

Kanaloa Tiki - Tiki of the Sea

Kanaloa is one of the four great tiki gods of Hawaiian mythology, along with Kāne, Kū, and Lono. He is the local form of a Polynesian tiki deity generally connected with the sea.

In the traditions of ancient Hawaiʻi, Kanaloa is symbolized by the squid or by the octopus, and is typically associated with Kāne in legends and chants where they are portrayed as complementary powers. For example: Kāne was called upon during the building of a canoe, Kanaloa during the sailing of it; Kāne governed the northern edge of the ecliptic, Kanaloa the southern. In this way, they represent a divine duality of wild and taming forces like those observed like the popular yin-yang of Chinese Taoism.

Kanaloa is also considered to be the tiki god of the Underworld and a teacher of magic. Legends state that he became the leader of the first group of spirits "spit out" by the gods. In time, he led them in a rebellion in which the spirits were defeated by the gods and as punishment were thrown in the Underworld.

Removing your shoes before entering someone's home or your own home is a tradition that is not only part of the Japanese culture, but also a custom for those of us who live in Hawaii. Because Hawaii's culture is so closely tied to that of the Japanese, you will find that Hawaii respects many of Japan's customs. MOAI - Easter Island Tiki

One of the world's most famous yet least visited archaeological sites, Easter Island is a small, hilly, now treeless island of volcanic origin. Located in the Pacific Ocean 2200 miles off the coast of Chile, it is considered to be the world’s most remote inhabited island. The oldest known traditional name of the island is Te Pito o Te Henua, meaning ‘The Center (or Navel) of the World.’ In the 1860’s Tahitian sailors gave the island the name Rapa Nui, meaning ‘Great Rapa,’ due to its resemblance to another island in Polynesia called Rapa Iti, meaning ‘Little Rapa’. The island received its most well known current name, Easter Island, from the Dutch sea captain Jacob Roggeveen who became the first European to visit Easter Sunday, April 5, 1722.

That culture's most famous features are its enormous stone tiki statues called moai, at least 288 of which once stood upon massive stone platforms called ahu. There are some 250 of these ahu platforms spaced approximately one half mile apart and creating an almost unbroken line around the perimeter of the island. Another 600 moai statues, in various stages of completion, are scattered around the island, either in quarries or along ancient roads between the quarries and the coastal areas where the tiki statues were most often erected. Nearly all the moai are carved from the tough stone of the Rano Raraku volcano. The average statue is 14 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 14 tons. Some moai were as large as 33 feet and weighed more than 80 tons (one statue only partially quarried from the bedrock was 65 feet long and would have weighed an estimated 270 tons). Depending upon the size of the tiki statues, it has been estimated that between 50 and 150 people were needed to drag them across the countryside on sleds and rollers made from the island's trees.

Suione Pilotili is a Polynesian master wood carver, environmental artist and educator. He is internationally renown with public art projects completed in England, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, the Czech Republic, and the U.S. Pilotili has been based out of San Francisco, California for the last fifteen years (1987 - 2002) and his work can be found in the Golden Gate National Parks, the San Francisco Zoo, Presidio National Park, the California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park, and Shoreline Amphitheater. He has designed and carved stage art for touring bands Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, and Peter Gabriel.

His wood sculptures have been featured at environmental, musical, and educational festivals around northern California, including Earth Day at the Concord Pavilion, the Bioneers Conference in San Francisco, and the United Religions Initiative Global Summit at Stanford University.

Suione been involved with various nonprofit organizations dedicated to recycling wood for its highest end use. Over the past eight years Pilotili was a director of the Bay Area Arborist Coop, Inc. specializing in the care of live trees in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been working with live trees for over twenty years.

Annick was the master packager at tikimaster.com! She made sure that all of our cool tikis arrived to their new homes in perfect condition. We had a joke around the warehouse that she was the "machine"! No one could ever move as fast as Annick and not make any mistakes! Annick was also responsible for feeding all of the hungry tikis and keeping everything neat and tiddy.

Tiki culture refers to a mid-20th-century theme used in Polynesian-style restaurants and clubs originally in the United States and then, to a lesser degree, around the world. The connection to Tiki, a character in the mythology of portions of the South Pacific, is tenuous at best, but tikis are still crazy popular! Tiki culture in the United States began in 1934 with the opening of Don the Beachcomber, a Polynesian-themed tiki bar and restaurant in Hollywood. The proprietor was Ernest Raymond Beaumont-Gantt, a young man from Louisiana who had sailed throughout the South Pacific; later he legally changed his name to Donn Beach. His tiki restaurant featured Cantonese cuisine and exotic rum punches, with a decor of flaming torches, rattan furniture, flower leis, brightly colored fabrics and tiki decor. Three years later, Victor Bergeron, better known as Trader Vic, adopted a Tiki theme for his restaurant in Oakland, which eventually grew to become a worldwide chain featuring tiki mugs.

Hawaiian Statehood further drove interest in the tiki phenonmenon and Americans fell in love with their romanticized version of an exotic tiki culture. Polynesian design began to infuse every aspect of the country's visual aesthetic, from home accessories to architecture, thus, tikis are just as popular today.

She was the daughter of the Earth Goddess Haumea and dwells in the Kilauea volcano. This wild and fiery goddess is widely venerated in Hawaii and other parts of Polynesia. Here is a very meaningful custom project executed by Tikimaster.com for MauiShirts.com. On March 4th, 2008, the long awaited hand carved tiki arrived. It required six months to carve, dry and stain.

The Hawaiian Temple Image, Kuka' ilimoku, was the personal War God of King Kamehameha I. The great warrior chief, Kamehameha, gave this deity of war, credit for his success, in uniting the islands of Hawai'i into one Kingdom.

The Tiki, Kuka' ilimoku, was hand carved from conception, Oct., 2007, by TikiMaster.com, Kailua, Hawaii from Acacia Koa Wood, (Monkey Pod).

The Tiki, Kuka' ilimoku, was respectfully blessed by the Reverend Kahuna Earl Kukahiko, March 4, 2008.

Tiki Kuka' ilimoku specs: 28 cubes, 68" High, 20" X 28" wide, weight approx. 200 lbs.

In Hawaii, turtles, referred to as honu, are considered very good luck. If you see a turtle before you enter the water for a swim or for a surf, the Hawaiians believe that you will be protected during your stay in the water. The large sea turtles that inhabit the Hawaiian waters are magical to watch. In the clear water, you can see the round figure of their large bodies, and every so often they pop up their tiny heads to grab a breathe. They are a wonderfully peaceful creature.

There are three species of sea turtles native to the Hawaiian Islands: the Green, the Hawksbill, and the Leatherback. These fascinating creatures have played important roles in the environment and culture of Hawaii's people. Of the three native sea turtles, the Green Turtle (Honu) is the most common.

These turtles, which can weigh up to 400 pounds, are primarily vegetarians. They eat algae or limu (Hawaiian seaweed) growing underwater on coral reefs and on rocks close to shore. Green turtles prefer to live near large "pastures" of limu that are located in near shore waters around the Hawaiian Islands. The carapaces (upper shells) of adults are dark with olive or gold flecks and receive their name from the color of their body fat rather than their shell color.

Tikimaster.com Carves for Quicksilver House

Tikimaster.com carved it up at the Quicksilver Pro. Surfers' House in the north shore of Oahu!

Tikimaster.com was contracted to carve tiki faces into two palm trees which are about 10-feet tall. The property is one of four houses used by QuickSilver to house professional surfers during the winter time competitions.

The initial phase consisted of using the chainsaw to make the major cuts, then hand tools followed to make the fine details of the tiki face come alive. We decided on one specific tree close to the home's lanai where we carved a tiki face on each side so that it could be seen not only from the house but also from the driveway! After the carvings were finished, we installed spotlights to create even more ambiance.

The second tree was topped off about 3 years ago, unlike the first tree which was topped off about 6 month ago. This tree was very dry and hard, hence the use of the chainsaw and no hand tools at all. Once the bark of the coconut tree was removed, we started by cutting the outer lines of the tiki totem. The lower face was fairly easy, the higher one was a little more challenging because of the precarious positions that we had to be on the ladder! The challenge of course was to be able to carve on the ladder while manipulating the chainsaw! Upon, completion we decided to add Pele's hair to the two tiki totems to give them hair! It really finished off their faces perfectly!

Waka are Maori watercraft, usually canoes, ranging in size from small ornamented canoes (waka tīwai) used for fishing and river travel, to large decorated war canoes (waka taua) up to 40 meters long. In recent years, large double-hulled canoes of considerable size have been constructed for oceanic voyaging to other parts of the Pacific.

Waka taua (war canoes) were large canoes manned by up to 80 paddlers and up to 40 metres in length. Waka taua . Many are single-hulled vessels made from a hollowed-out tree trunk. Large waka, which are usually elaborately carved and decorated, may consist of several jointed pieces lashed together. Waka taua are no longer used in warfare. Celebrate President's Day - Tiki Style!

From everyone here at Tikimaster.com, we wish you a wonderful day off on President's Day. Here on the islands of Hawaii, we tend to get together with our friends and ohana (family in Hawaiian) and have a luau BBQ. We hang the ol' stars and stripes, light up the grill, clean up the tiki bar, mix some mai tais (see our previous blog for a great recipe) and toast to the old guys (that's in Presidents).

Tikimaster.com thinks that every BBQ should incorporate tikis! We like to decorate our pop-up tents on the beach with tiki masks and large totems. It invites people passing by to drop in and share a cold one with us! We'd like to share Tikimaster.com's secret family recipe for Chicken Teriyaki on the grill with you!
Ingredients
1 chicken or 4-5 chicken breasts
1/2 cup Aloha shoyu (if can get it) or regular soy sauce will do.
1/4 cup oil
2 Tbs. sugar
2 Tbs. white wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, mashed
1 generous Tbs. finely chopped fresh ginger

Method

-Combine ingredients for the marinade, then marinade the chicken for 1 - 2 hours, it's even better if you marinade over night.
-Place chicken on a medium hot grill and cook for about 10 minutes on each side. Or bake in a large shallow roasting pan and bake at 325º for about 1 and 1/2 hours or longer, basting every 15 minutes with some of the marinade.

The answer is "YES". While they were used in bloody situation, today the fighting clubs are seen as art pieces that you hang on the wall or even to accessories your Tiki bar.
Some of the most popular Fijian and Samoan fighting clubs are called: Fish hook, Nifo Oti (dancing knife), Neck Braker, Throwing clubs and much more. Use like an axe to crack skull and break bones. Targets the head, arms and legs. Can make a clean break of the bones without much bleeding.

The Samoan clubs are easy to recognized, they are usually black with detailed carving on both side of the club. The wood used is iron wood also known as Vesi wood. Fijian and Samoan would leave the wood underground for x amount of time to give the back natural color.

Checkout the back of the chopper. Dangling from in between the sissy bar you can see a Hawaiian pahoa with tiger shark teeth. The airbrush on the entire chopper features Hawaiian designs and symbolisms. If you look at the gas tank you will see a Hawaiian warrior.

Tiki masks and tiki wall plaques are both made out of wood and are both hand carved. The carvers pay close attention to the small details that create the overall character of the tiki. Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in honor of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family.

The Museum was established to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of the Princess, and has expanded to include millions of artifacts, documents and photographs about Hawai‘i and other Pacific island cultures.

Mr. Bishop built the magnificent Polynesian and Hawaiian Halls on the grounds of the original Kamehameha Schools for Boys. The Museum and School shared the Kapālama campus until 1940 when a new larger school complex was opened nearby on Kapālama Heights.

Today, Bishop Museum is the largest museum in the state and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific, recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services and public educational programs. It also has one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world. Serving and representing the interests of Native Hawaiians is a primary purpose of the Museum.

The Museum also operates two other institutions: Hawaii Maritime Center (located in Honolulu Harbor next to Aloha Tower Marketplace) and the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden (on the island of Hawai'i ).

Gerry Lopez not only made Pipeline the world’s most important wave, he made the tube the ultimate prize in surfing. He ripped the waves on the North Shore of Oahu, and cruised in the tube (the inner round tube part of a wave), making himself one of the coolest surfers Hawaii has ever seen!

Lopez was born in Honolulu, the son of a newsman for the city’s Bulletin and Advertiser. When Lopez got serious about surfing in high school, his hero was Paul Strauch -- his style and grace would be Lopez’s reference point. At Ala Moana in the mid-’60s, Lopez witnessed his first tube rides, and the wave became his training ground.

During the epic winter of 1969-’70, Lopez set the standard for riding the tube at the world’s most dangerous break. Suddenly, nothing else mattered in surfing. The barrel was now hallowed ground, and the barrel at Pipe was Shangri La.

Ku – The Ancient Tiki God of War & Strength

In ancient mythic Hawaii, from fire spewing volcanoes too powerful crashing surf, ancient Hawaiians filled their amazing land and history with tiki gods. Ancient oracles of Hawaiian kahunas perched on volcanic cliffs, carved wooden tikis peering through the rainforest, mystic caves along the cost and great tiki god temples of sacrifice were located amongst the Hawaiian tiki villages and islands. They were worshipped through human sacrifice, chants (for wealth, death or love), prayers, surfing and lava sledding.

In Hawaiian mythology Ku is one of the four great gods along with the ancient tiki gods, Kanaloa, Kane, and Lono. He was the husband of the goddess Hina, suggesting a complementary dualism as the word ku in the Hawaiian language means "standing up" while one meaning of 'hina' is 'fallen down.'

Ku is worshipped under many names, including Ku-ka-ili-moku, the "Seizer of Land" (a feather-god, the guardian of Kamehameha). Rituals included human sacrifice, which was not part of the worship of the other gods. Ku, Kane, and Lono caused light to shine in upon the world. They are uncreated gods who have existed from eternity.
